We are no longer moving to Texas.
We are moving to ....
GERMANY!
Shocked? We are!
Pete got an email yesterday at work, with a rundown of where all the residents were headed. Everyone's was the same except Pete's. His said Grafenwohr.
We were specifically told that the bases in the European area were closing down, and they would not be taking anyone to those areas. We had not requested to go overseas, so we were both very shocked. Pete made the phone call to the person in charge of assignments, and it turns out that Pete's request list was mixed up with someone elses list, and so we are headed to this other dentists' first choice, not ours.
Now, they are still in the process of closing bases overseas, and Pete is only going to this base in Germany to take over for the dentist leaving. This means that we might only be there for 12 months, but we might be there for 36 months, which is all the time we have left in the army.
My first reaction to this was to cry. Shock, fear and the unknown all hit me. I have now had 24 hours to stew over it, and I am starting to get a little excited. We will hopefully live on base, but we will be a few hours away from major touring places, sites and countries. Italy is only about 170 miles away, France is not far, and flying from country to country will be very inexpensive for the family. And I will get to see a bunch of these:
Hopefully my photography skills will get better, so I can get some awesome shots.
There are still a million unknowns, and I will keep you all posted as we figure them out. And the offer still stands: anyone who wants to visit is welcome to stay with us. We already have family members planning trips, and we have only known for 24 hours!

I still can't believe you are going to Germany. I am actually kind of jealous... yet totally excited for you. it will be a great experience. And, I'm already saving up to come next year. We will have to take a trip down to Venice!
How exciting! They could still change their mind though right? You'll go where you're meant to go I guess. Everything works out. TX or Germany, you guys will love it. I wish we could visit you in either place. :)
AMAZING you guys...what a fabulous adventure. Can't wait to read all about it here!
Wow, I'm totally shocked!! How exciting, when else in your life do you get to live across seas for a short time. I'm so excited for you guys. I think I would have been a little scared too at first, but what an awesome opportunity. I can't wait to hear more about it.
That is incredible news! I'm so jealous!

Holy Crap! I'm way excited for you and very bummed you will be so far away. If I know you, you will make the very most of this opportunity for your family to see the world. Have a blast!
Wow! I know you didn't really want to go overseas, but what an awesome adventure for your family! I am completely jealous. 1-3 years getting to tour Europe? It will be so much fun.
Definitely an adventure! I've had family stationed in Germany and I know they loved it! I'm very excited for the pictures, and very jealous of your position behind the lens there! Still, I feel for your anxiety over the strangeness and distance. But like Jessica says, when else would you have such an amazing opportunity! Good luck!!!
Wow how exciting! I loved Germany when I was there, it was so beautiful! I assume there is a school on base where your kids can go that is in English, and hey now you get to learn German. There are YMCA's in Germany too and you don't have to speak German to teach Zumba:) Good luck with everything, what an adventure.
That is huge news! I would be scared as well. I know you and your family will do fine and will make the most of this opportunity to experience a new country. How exciting!
I don't know, I always thought you guys should be Germany-bound. You are the adventurous type, yes? It'll be a life changer, and probably challenging, but I think you'll end up treasuring the experience. We'll love to hear updates from you!
