PhotoStory Friday: Starting The New Year

This little boy only knows the joy he feels at having his new train.
He doesn't know that his parent's have had a rough year.
He doesn't understand that he is living in a foreign country.
He doesn't know that many of his family members are struggling.

He also doesn't know that it's a new year.
He doesn't know that we all get to start fresh today.
He doesn't know that starting right now, we are all making resolutions to be better people, because in fact, deep down, being a better person is what everyone truly wants to be.

He just knows he has a new train.
And he is content with that.

Happy 2010 Everyone! I hope that it will be a great and blessed year for all!

The Chaos We Call Christmas Day

We had a great first Christmas in Germany. It was nice to spend the day at home, and not have to run around to visit people, although I do miss that. Half-way through the day, our missionaries came over and spent the rest of the day at our house. We had fun playing with new toys and eating tons (and tons) of food.

Our day started at 12:35 a.m., when Annie came to our room and told us she wanted to open presents. When we told her it wasn't time to open them, and that she should go back to bed or Santa wouldn't come, she said "but he already came." I said, "how do you know that?" to which she replied " I already went downstairs!"
It took her over an hour to fall back to sleep in our bed, and I (not feeling well and getting tired of being kicked) slept in her bed.

The calm before the storm.

Annie was leaping down the stairs with excitement....

... I, on the other hand, wasn't as excited.

We let the kids open their stockings as they each woke up, and then made them sit and wait for everyone else. We are so mean.

The highlight of the stockings were tiny snow globes.

Santa put up our Polar Express train again this year. That's another highlight of Christmas day.

Cooper was a little slow at opening, but he didn't care.

Annie was giddy when she opened the Tinkerbell movie. Her friends have it, and she was so excited to get it.

We finally got to watch "Up."

Annie's new baby bunk bed. Her dolls now sleep next to her.

She couldn't be bothered to turn around for a picture.

This was the hit for Noah. His face was priceless as he opened it. He has been asking for it for about a year. Santa must have been listening.

Presents from Grandma Hodson.

Pete gave me another Willow Tree statue!

We're gonna make him a strong man yet!!

It's always fun to play with the toys when they're still in the box. It takes too long to get them out of the box.

Cooper's favorite toy was this plane. He calls it his "hairplane."

Annie frantically opened Pete's new bike trainer...

Santa brought us a Wii!!!! It has been so much fun!

Noah got a little carried away throwing paper away.

After the storm.

I love watching the kids as they watch the train. They are always so mesmerized.

Cooper thought it was great that he had two trains!

One of our favorite missionaries, Elder Willard, entertaining Cooper.

Bumblebee, A.K.A Cooper, giving us his version of thumbs up.

Annie testing her skills on the Wii Hula Hoop.

Pete also tested his skills. I am sad to admit that after his initial attempt at this, he kicked my trash in Hula Hoop.

We had a great Day! Hopefully so did all of you!

Christmas Eve

Our Christmas Eve was pretty relaxed. I did a lot of baking, getting ready for Christmas day, so that I wouldn't have to make anything that day. It paid off. All I did was put stuff in the oven, already made.

The kids put together some stocking crafts, thanks to Grandma Ruth. They had a lot of fun, and the stockings are still hanging up.

Our Christmas Eve tradition is to let the kids open their presents from each other. They each picked out one gift for their siblings, and I think each gift was a winner. Noah got a Bionicle (lego), Annie got a new stuffed kitty, and Cooper got a Thomas the Train.

We also let them open their gifts from Grandma Ruth, only because they were itching to open something else! They each got a pair of gloves. Noah wore his all night long, and all of Christmas day.

My favorite moment of the night was definitely Cooper playing with his new train. He loves it, and calls it by it's full name always: Thomas "de" Train.

We left some sugar cookies for Santa and a few carrots for the reindeer, and Noah left him a little note and a candy cane. When Pete mentioned that he thought he heard sleigh bells on the roof, the kids bolted up the stairs... it kind of reminded me of the scene from The Christmas Story, when Ralphie and Randy are pushing each other as they make their way up the stairs. There was no fighting or whining when the kids went to bed. We were so excited to have one night out of the whole year for that!

PhotoStory Friday: Christmas Happiness

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily

I had originally planned this picture for my PSF, because it was to be the last thing I took a picture of on Christmas Eve.  The nativity story had been told, prayers had been said, and the kids raced off to bed as they thought they heard sleigh bells on the roof.

But it wasn't the last picture I took.
These were the last pictures I took on Christmas Eve.

It's pure happiness in Cooper's eyes as he plays with a new train his sister picked out for him.

As I am thinking back to the gifts that were picked out for each of the kids, I am realizing that they don't need lots of things.  I tell myself this every year, and every year I ignore myself.
Cooper was happy with this one thing from his siblings, and if that was all received this year, he would be content.

It's the spirit of the season that they need to learn, not how to behave while Santa is watching (although that helps).

I am thankful for this little moment of happiness Cooper shared with me.  It set the mood for a wonderful Christmas day tomorrow.

Merry Christmas to All!

No School... Let's Find Entertainment

It was the first official week of winter break.  Annie had to go to school Monday and Tuesday, but Noah was home.  Cooper LOVED having Noah home to play with, and Noah did a great job at wearing Cooper out.  Here are a few highlights of the week so far...

Monday:  Sugar Cookies.

Tuesday:  The first Snowman of the year.

Wednesday:  Gingerbread cookies with our good friends.

By the way, I am only posting this one because of Annie...

Coop didn't frost any cookies.  Eating them was more important.

Joey had some frosting on her elbow.

Coop's masterpiece was the mess he made with the sprinkles.

Bailey's masterpiece was a heaping pile of goodies on top of a snowflake.

The aftermath.
(I think there was actually more on the table and floor than ever reached the cookies.)
